Ahrefs is an SEO and search marketing platform covering competitor and backlink research (Site Explorer), keyword research, site audits, rank tracking and web analytics, with add-ons such as Brand Radar for tracking brand visibility in AI assistants, plus an API and MCP server.

Verdict: Independent SEO practitioners, mostly in r/bigseo, broadly treat Ahrefs as the benchmark for backlink data and link auditing, and several say it is the one paid suite they kept when consolidating tools. The main trade-offs are cost, traffic and keyword estimates that users call directional at best, and newer pieces that lag: rank tracking and Site Explorer suffered after Google's num=100 change, and some who tried Brand Radar preferred rivals. About one in seven comments were promotional, including five replies from Ahrefs staff in a feedback thread the company hosted and several plugs for other products; these were excluded.

What users like

  • Backlink data is widely seen as the strongest of the major suites; users who keep Semrush or SE Ranking for other work still turn to Ahrefs for link analysis[1][2][3][4][5][6][7]
  • Useful for catching spam and toxic links: users report spotting a link farm pointed at their site and disavowing it, and filtering out junk domains[1][2][3][4]
  • Broad enough to be the one paid suite: users who cut their tool spend kept Ahrefs plus a crawler such as Screaming Frog, and long-time users prefer it for medium to large SEO projects[1][2][3][4]
  • Site Audit is rated well, including by a user running Ahrefs and Semrush side by side, though users say it does not replace Screaming Frog[1][2][3]
  • The MCP server and API credits on smaller plans let SEOs work through Claude and coding agents; one says it made their SEO managers far more productive[1][2]

What users complain about

  • Expensive: users call the price high, have switched to SE Ranking to save money without missing much, or stay on cheaper tools until they have the budget[1][2][3]
  • Traffic and organic keyword estimates can be far off, especially for small or low-authority sites, and one user says they have become less reliable after recent core updates[1][2][3][4]
  • Slow to recover from Google's num=100 change: with keyword tracking still unfixed after weeks, one user was cancelling and another saw it as a sign of low priority, and a team says Site Explorer never fully recovered[1][2][3]
  • Brand Radar, its AI visibility tracker, gets a weak reception: one enterprise user found its data looked like rehashed keyword data and chose Peec.ai, another rates Semrush's equivalent higher, and a third found it too expensive to test[1][2][3]
  • Gaps push some users to other tools: no pixel-position rank tracking, no free developer sandbox for the API, and Site Explorer history limited to two years below higher tiers[1][2][3]

Best for

  • SEOs whose work centres on backlink analysis, link audits and spotting spam or toxic links
  • Comparing a site's keywords, links and traffic against competitors of similar size
  • Teams consolidating to one main SEO suite plus a dedicated crawler
  • SEOs who want to pull Ahrefs data into Claude or coding agents via its MCP and API

Skip it if

  • Small sites or tight budgets that can get by with Search Console, a crawler and a cheaper keyword tool
  • Anyone who needs exact traffic or keyword numbers rather than directional estimates
  • Teams that need pixel-position rank tracking or a free developer sandbox for the API

In their own words

SE Ranking is best for schedule reports, but Ahrefs is the best SEO tool on the market for keyword and backlink-related stuff.
Interesting breakdown. From my experience the backlink gap is still pretty noticeable too. SEMrush is great for keyword work, but whenever I’m doing anything link related I still end up relying on Ahrefs. Curious if anyone here actually made the switch and stuck with it.

I’ve seen the same thing in audits too. Ahrefs still wins backlinks and it’s not even close. SEMrush nails keyword clustering but the link index feels noisy especially on “lost links.” The bloat issue is real too.

I generally like Ahrefs, but consider using DataForSEO even with a GUI like SEOUtils or build something custom with python. Ahrefs is still best at backlink, tho.

In case you are making a selection for 2026, the proper platform will totally depend on how thoroughly you want to go and how much accuracy you are ready to pay for. SEMrush (Classic vs One) Classic SEMrush still has more powerful all-around tools for agencies: competitive research, PPC, site audits, writing assistant, and large keyword databases. SEMrush One is more of an “ecosystem bundle” — an easier to …
It really comes down to *what you actually do day to day*, not which tool markets itself better. **Ahrefs** Best if link analysis, competitor backlink gaps, and off-page work are core to your workflow. The UI is focused, data feels consistent, and it’s hard to beat for pure link intelligence. **SEMrush** More of an all-in-one marketing suite. Great if you’re doing a mix of SEO, content, PPC research, and site a…
