Methodology
1. What counts as evidence
Our evidence is public Reddit discussion from October 2024 onward, in the communities where buyers of each category talk shop (for example r/sales, r/coldemail, r/SaaS, r/SEO, r/CRM, r/n8n). We collect comments that name a tool, from two sources: full-text search of a public Reddit archive, and threads surfaced by web search for each tool. Thread comments are read in full and matched to tool names.
2. What we deliberately ignore
- Vendor content: blogs, "best X" listicles, comparison pages and case studies published by any tool vendor, including competitors.
- Review platforms: G2, Capterra, TrustRadius, GetApp, Trustpilot and similar. Vendors routinely solicit reviews there with incentives, and the platforms sell placement.
- Testimonials and press releases.
- Affiliate and sponsored content: anything with referral links, and creator posts that are paid or have affiliate deals.
3. Removing interested voices
Within Reddit itself, we remove a comment when:
- the author discloses working for, founding or building a tool ("I work at", "our platform", "we built");
- the username contains the tool's name;
- it contains an affiliate or referral link;
- it pitches a service ("DM me", "my agency can set this up");
- it is an AI-style listicle naming six or more tools;
- the author mentions the same tool in three or more separate threads, a common pattern for undisclosed promoters;
- it is deleted, from a bot, under 60 characters, or downvoted below zero.
Each author counts at most once per tool. Comments that survive are then read in context. If one still reads as promotion (for example a comment that mentions a tool only to plug a different product), we mark it promotional and leave it out of the score.
4. Scoring
Each remaining comment is classified as positive, negative, mixed or neutral about the tool. Neutral mentions (a bare name in a list) don't count. The score is the lower bound of the 95% Wilson confidence interval for the share of favourable comments, with mixed comments counted as half favourable, scaled to 100. This means a tool praised by 6 of 6 people scores lower than one praised by 80 of 100: small samples prove little.
A tool needs at least 8 rated comments to receive a rank. Tools below that threshold are still reviewed, but marked "not enough independent evidence".
5. Writing the reviews
Verdicts, pros and cons are summaries of the comment set, written with AI assistance and constrained to cite their sources. An automated check rejects any claim whose citation isn't in the filtered evidence set. Pricing is the only vendor-sourced data on the site, and it's labelled as vendor-stated, with the date we checked it.
6. Known limitations
- Reddit skews toward smaller teams, agencies and technical users; enterprise buyers are under-represented.
- People post more often when something breaks, so complaints are over-represented for widely used tools.
- Undisclosed promoters who post once and never disclose can slip through.
- Tools change quickly; a complaint from 2024 may be fixed. Every quote shows its date.
7. Independence
No vendor can pay to be listed, ranked, or removed. We don't use affiliate links. If that ever changes, it will be disclosed on every affected page and will never affect scores. See About & disclosures.
